10 January 2009 – The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games logo was officially launched today by Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports.
Spirit of Youth – the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games logo – celebrates Singapore 2010 in an adventurous, open and fun way. It evokes the Singaporean sense of confidence and progress. A red flame represents the passion to learn and the power of positive thinking. A purple star symbolises excellence and the pride of representing one’s nation. A crescent reflects dynamic youth, full of promise. The active appearance of the “Singapore 2010” word mark comprises individual and unique characters that signify harmony among the diverse participants. “The Tokyo 2016 logo takes the form of a traditional Japanese knot known as “MUSUBI”. It integrates the five Olympic colours into a motif of colourful and decorative knotted strings which have long been utilised in Japan to signify blessings during times of celebration.”

The jagged emblem, based on the date 2012, comes in a series of shades of pink, blue, green and orange and will evolve in the run-up to the Games.

What is the meaning of the Olympic rings logo?

The five rings represent the continents of the Americas (North and South), Australia, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The rings are interlaced to show the coming together or meeting of the continents at the Olympics.

The logo was designed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games, in 1913. He said of the design:

The logo of the XX Winter Olympiad, held in Italy, is meant to resemble a local monument stretching up to the sky, known as the "Mole Antonelliana". The logo also symbolizes a web, recognizing the emerging presence of technology as well as the nations of the world connecting together for the Olympic Games. The image, doubling as a transparent mountain, is also meant to symbolise that Torino is a gateway, not a wall, for the world to enjoy the games. The logo was designed by the Benincasa-Husmann studio in Milan, and was chosen the winner of a contest to design the Olympic logo in November 2001.

This is the logo for the Salt Lake 2002 Olympics. It represents a stylized snow crystal with bright colours - yellow, orange and blue. These are the colours found in the Utah landscape. The theme conveyed by these graphic elements is threefold: Contrast, Culture and Courage. Contrast symbolising the Utah landscape - from the arid desert to the snowy mountains; Culture representing the different cultures which make the region the exceptional heritage of America; and Courage reflecting the spirit of the athletes - the very essence of the Games. This theme followed the feeling of the inhabitants of Utah who wanted the emblem to reflect the diversity of the landscape and heritage of their region, as well as the Olympic spirit. Atlanta 1996 Olympic Torch

The torch was inspired by the simplest ancient torches - a cluster of reeds bound by twine - and also reflected the lines of classical Greek architecture. It featured 22 aluminium "reeds" (one for each Olympic Games). On the first gold plated brass ring is the inscription "Atlanta 1996" with the Games emblem. Chicago 2016 applicant city

The logo is described as a compass pointing in all direction reaching out to the world. The bands of color radiating up and down from the star reflect both the "dynamic architecture of our city and the beautiful character of our parks and lakes but they also symbolize our desire to reach out of the world and offer many paths to the games", says Chicago 2016.

The star symbolize Hope, Respect, Harmony, Friendship, Excellence and Celebration.

Nagano 1998

A flower, with each petal representing an athlete practicing a winter sport, and which can also be seen as a snowflake symbolizing the olympic winter games. The emblem is also evocative of a mountain flower, emphasinzing Nagano's commitment to the environment, and was thus named snow flower. The dynamic nature of this vivid and colorful picture foreshad owed the enthusiastic atmospere in which the games took place, and symbolized their brilliance throughout the world.

Beijing 2008

The stick-figure that comprises the logo looks like a lively runner or dancer and also mimics the chinese character ''went'' meaning humanity (renew) or culture (wenham). Some experts said it also resembles the character ''jingo'' meaning the chinese capital, or Beijing. The emblem also represents the ancient chinese art of sealcutting which dates back 3,700 years to the Yin Dynasty. Seals were used as a personal ''signature'' as well as for offical documents.

Ancient Olympic games:

The Ancient Olympic Games (Greek: Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες; Olympiakoi Agones) were a series of athletic competitions held for representatives of various city-states of Ancient Greece. Records indicate that they began in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece. They were celebrated until 393 AD. The Games were usually held every four years, or olympiad, as the unit of time came to be known. During a celebration of the Games, an Olympic Truce was enacted to enable athletes to travel from their countries to Olympia in safety. The prizes for the victors were laurel wreaths, palm branches, woolen ribbons and sometimes even food for life. The ancient Olympics were rather different from the modern Games. There were fewer events, and only free men who spoke Greek could compete, instead of athletes from any country. Also, the Games were always held at Olympia instead of moving around to different places every time. At first, the Olympic Games lasted only one day, but eventually grew to five days. The Olympic Games originally contained one event: the stadion (or "stade") race, a short sprint measuring between 180 and 240 metres, or the length of the stadium. The length of the race is uncertain, since tracks found at archeological sites, as well as literary evidence, provide conflicting measurements. Runners had to pass five stakes that divided the lanes: one stake at the start, another at the finish, and three stakes in between.To be in the Games, the athletes had to qualify and have their names written in the lists. It seems that only young people were allowed to participate, as the Greek writer Plutarch relates that one young man was rejected for seeming too mature, and only after his lover interceded with the King of Sparta, who presumably vouched for his youth, was he permitted to participate. Before being able to participate, every participant had to take an oath in front of the statue of Zeus, saying that he had been in training for ten months.Unlike the Modern Olympic Games, only free men who spoke Greek were allowed to participate in the Ancient Games of classical times. They were to some extent "international", though, in the sense that they included athletes from the various Greek city-states. Additionally, participants eventually came from Greek colonies as well, extending the range of the games to far shores of the Mediterranean and of the Black Sea.

These five rings -- blue, yellow, black, green and red -- represent the five parts of the world now encompassed by Olympism and ready to compete against each other. Moreover, the six colors (including the white background) thus combined represent those of all nations, without exception. The blue and yellow of Sweden, the blue and white of Greece, the French, English, American, German, Belgian, Italian and Hungarian tricolors, the yellow and red of Spain are side by side with the new Brazilian and Australian flags, the old Japan and the new China. Sydney Olympics (2000)

The Sydney 2000 Games were the largest yet, with 10,651 athletes competing in 300 events. Despite their size, they were well organised, renewing faith in the Olympic Movement. Birgit Fischer earned two gold medals in Kayak to become the first woman in any sport to win medals 20 years apart. Judoka Ryoko Tamura lost in the final in both Barcelona and Atlanta, but came back to win the gold medal in Sydney. Steven Redgrave became the first rower to win gold medals at five consecutive Olympics. The US softball team won in stirring fashion, losing three games in a row and then coming back to defeat each of the teams they had lost to.

The emblem represents the figure of an athlete, using typically Australian shapes and colours. Moscow Olympics (1980)

A U.S.-led boycott reduced the number of participating nations to 80, the lowest number since 1956. Aleksandr Dityatin earned medals in every men's gymnastics event to become the only athlete ever to win eight medals in one Olympics. Super-heavyweight Teófilo Stevenson became the first boxer to win the same division three times. Gerd Wessig became the first male high jumper to break the world record at the Olympics and swimmer Vladimir Salnikov broke the 15-minute barrier for the 1,500m. In adramatic confrontation, runners Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe split the 800 and 1,500m.

The official emblem was created by Vladimir Arsentyev. Above the Olympic rings we find parallel lines in the shape of a pyramid, and a five pointed star which serves as a reminder of the flag of the Kremlin.

Atlanta Olympics (1996)

The 1996 Games were given a dramatic start when the cauldron was lit by Muhammad Ali. On 27 July during a concert held in the Centennial Olympic Park, a terrorist bomb killed one person and injured a further 110 people, but the Atlanta Games are best remembered for their sporting achievements. A record-setting 79 nations won medals and 53 won gold. Carl Lewis became only the third person to win the same individual event four times and the fourth person to earn a ninth gold medal. Naim Suleymanoglu became the first weightlifter to win a third gold medal. Michael Johnson smashed the 200m world record to complete a 200m and 400m double.

The base of the torch mark logo, made of the five Rings and the number 100, resembles a classical Greek column and recognizes the centennial of the Games. The torch mark's flames gradually evolve into a perfect star symbolizing each athlete's pursuit of excellence. The gold colour in this logo represents gold medals. The green represents laurel branches worn by winners in ancient times, as well as Atlanta's reputation as the City of Trees.

Ever since the Western archaeological discovery of the ancient Olympic Games - which were used as the antecedent of the modern Olympic Games - historians and archaelogists have made numerous attempts to trace back the ancient Olympic Games to their historical source in an attempt to better understand their meaning and importance.

Finally on August 1st, 2008, on the eve of the modern Beijing Olympic Games, and on the same date used by the ancient Mesopotamians to commemorate the ancient Gilgamesh Games, the Gilgamesh Games thesis has finally been published online. After years of researching archaelogical source data we are able to present to you what may very well be the origins of the ancient Olympic Games.

The main thesis shall show that the Mesopotamian (modern day Iraqi) cultural influence that had for centuries percolated into ancient Greece through contact with the Hittites (living in modern day Turkey) and other peoples appears to have suddenly swamped Greece during the middle of the 8th century BC. This was during the start of the Sargonid dynasty which saw the Assyrian (ancient Iraqi) empire reach its geographical zenith and incorporate colonies such as the Greek island of Cyprus.

It was during this period that the funerary rituals and the athletic ‘feats of strength,’ depicted in the Death of Bilgames cuneiform tablet, along with other Mesopotamian athletics festivals may have been adopted from the ancient Mesopotamians and gradually incorporated into the ancient Greek Olympic Games.

Based on original Mesopotamian and Greek source material there are a total of eleven major similarities discovered thus far that may show that the ancient Greek Olympic Games have their antecedent in the ancient Gilgamesh Games.

The revelation that the Olympian “jewel in the crown” of Western civilisation may trace back to the Middle East may unsettle many readers, who have been immersed within the framework of Orientalism. It will also sound the final death knell for the artificial concept of “Western civilisation."

Later the modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in April 1896 and since then it is being held continuously.
The Olympic Games provide the good opportunities to the host country to show its culture, economy and heritage to the world. Almost every country of the world participates in the Olympic Games. The 1988 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXIV Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event celebrated in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea. It was the second summer Olympic Games to be held in Asia and the first since 1964 when the Summer Games were held in Tokyo.
North Korea, still officially at war with South Korea, boycotted the event and was joined by Albania, Cuba, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Nicaragua, and Seychelles.[1] However, the much larger boycotts seen in the previous three summer Olympics were avoided, resulting in the largest ever number of participating nations to that date.
In the Seoul Games, 160 nations were represented by a total of 8391 athletes (2194 women and 6197 men) in the games. 237 events were held. 27221 volunteers helped to prepare the Olympics. 11331 media (4978 written press and 6353 broadcasters) showed the Games all over the world.

Beijing Olympics.

The emblem draws on various elements of Chinese culture, depicting a traditional red Chinese seal above the words "Beijing 2008" and the Olympic rings. The seal is inscribed with a stylised calligraphic rendition of the Chinese character ? Singapore is known as the Lion City worldwide and thus, I use a stylised lion head to represent our distinct nation. With a smile on its youthful face, Singapore will be seen as not only serious about making this event a success but ensuring that we are totally friendly and accessible to all the participants worldwide.Secondly, the lion head is drawn to look like a torch flame to depict the youthful spirit of the participants. To that, I recommend the tagline “Be the light of our future.” After all, youths are our future and with them being the light, our world will be a better one.Thirdly, the five values of olympism are represented by the five locks/arches of the mane around the face of the lion. Together with the other 21 locks/arches that creates the whole mane, the 26 locks/arches also represent all the games that will be played in YOG 2010. The red, orange and yellow colours gives vibrancy and it is attractive to all crowds including children and youth. Yet, it is sophisticated enough for the adults. The logo exudes professionalism in the highest order as well as great dignity, thus embodying the spirit of the games.

Excitement
This logo truly stirs the imagination of the Olympics coming to Chicago. The star from our flag is in the logo. The Chicago flag. You know what this means? Chicago will DEFINITELY be adding a fifth star to our flag if we get the Olympics. This logo creates a sense of reality that this WILL happen. Just the thought of potentially adding another star to our flag gets me pumped up.

Gradients
Boy howdy, this logo is using gradients galore, usually that’s a no-no in logo design, because it’s hard to reproduce on things like pens. But using the gradients balances out the bold, striking colors by softening the edges. Plus the gradients give a sense of movement.

Architecture
The previous logo really represented the architecture of Chicago. The newer version only subtely hints towards it, but it does it enough to be part of the meaning without clobering you over the head. The yellow and red do a nice job of portraying architecture during sunset or sunrise.

Star
As the Chicago2016.org says, “The central star reflects the design of the four stars on the City’s flag and symbolizes our plan to put the athletes at the center of the Games—since they’re the real stars.” Nicely put! Especially since previous American bids got shot down for being too American-focused and cocky.

Extra meaning
The six points on the star are meant to represent Hope, Respect, Harmony, Friendship, Excellence and Celebration. Yeah yeah, whatever, that’s just extra nicey nice talk. Then again, why not? It adds a little more back story to the logo. Better to do have these extra meanings than to not have them mean anything at all.

Typography
I'm still yet to figure out exactly what font they used in this logo. In the newer version they went with a slightly less bold version. Perhaps this is to go along with the more humble approach the Chicago committee is taking.

Animation potenial
Having a star be the focus of the logo opens up some great opportunities to use animations with shining stars and glittering effects.

“My painting carries with it the message of pain.”
Frida Kahlo discovered her affinity for painting when she was confined to her bed at the age of 18 after a bus accident. Although art was not an intended career of hers, she found that during her time bed-ridden, she was able to find solace and express her pain regarding her physical and emotional complications through painting.

“I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best.”
Kahlo took to her paintings with a brutally honest yet surreal perspective. Feeling internally conflicted she felt that self-portraits were channel for her to depict her innermost thoughts and reflections.

“I never paint dreams or nightmares. I paint my own reality.”
In keeping with her surrealistic tone, Kahlo claimed that her work was not just an “artistic vision” but a self-contained reality in itself.

I’ve chosen “The Two Fridas” as I feel that it best merges these three themes which were generally central to her work.

It's about an art piece of Frida at about four years old wearing a traditional skull mask at a annual Mexican festival "Day of the Dead". The festival celebrates death & not mourned it. This picture shows her standing alone on a empty,plain vast beneath a stormy sky. At her feet is a carved wooden tiger mask that resembles the one that hangs on Frida's dining room. Neither masks, the one she's wearing and on her feet, is appropriate for this little girl; that accentuate her innoncence but hint at the cruelty of her fate.

She was his chicuita ("little one") and he was her "frog prince," but the path of love was not a smooth one for Frida and Diego. Almost from the moment of their marriage in 1929, there were problems. But 1949 was a particularly low point in their relationship. Rumors circulated that Diego intended to marry the film star Maria Felix, with whom he was having an affair. Although nothing came of the affair and Diego remained with Frida, she was hurt. The self-portrait Diego and I came out of this experience.

The Lenin portrait was a reflection of both Diego and Frida being communists, and active in the revolution movement in Mexico, where they returned late in 1933. Diego was a supporter of Leon Trotsky,who stalin had ousted from the Soviet Union, a few years after the death of Lenin, and Diego helped Trotsky move to Mexico early in 1937. There Leon and his wife Natalia got to stay in Frida's house in Coyoacan, the Casa Azul. Frida was very fond of Trotsky, and they had a very brief affair. For Leon's birthday November 7th, Frida painted the Between the Curtains portrait for him:
Center. This mural included a portrait of lenin, the founder of soviet union, and such a portrait was politically incorrect. Ultimately the Crossroads mural was chipped to dust and destroyed.

What is it about?
This self-portrait includes two images of the artist. The first lies with her back toward us on a hospital gurney, her head to the left, apparently anesthetized. She is wrapped in a white sheet except for her lower back, which is exposed to show two large surgical cuts dripping blood. The second figure sits facing us in a chair in front of the right side of the gurney.
The sitting figure is essentially the familiar Frida Kahlo of many self-portraits--erect, beautifully dressed in colorful Mexican style, and her face composed in spite of the tear on her right cheek. The difference here is the presence of medical paraphernalia. The upright Kahlo holds in her lap a large back brace, and she seems to be simultaneously wearing the same device under her dress. In her right hand she holds a small flag with a Spanish inscription that could be translated: "Tree of hope, stay firm."

The Accident

The Accident, 1926, Pencil on paper, 7.8" x 10.6", Collection of Juan Coronel, Cuernavaca, Mexico.On Sept. 17, 1925, Frida suffered an accident that would change her life. One year later, she sketched The Accident, in the style of traditional Mexican ex-voto paintings. As religious works of art, ex-voto paintings, usually executed on tin sheets, portray scenes of miraculous heavenly interventions. The miracle in this sketch is that Frida did not die. Another signature of the ex-voto style is that events are described both in pictures and words. Most of Frida's paintings would incorporate elements of the ex-voto style.

Iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907 – 1954) created striking artworks that were a visual diary of a lifetime of physical and emotional pain and her turbulent marriage to fellow artist Diego Rivera. A polio survivor, Kahlo was gravely injured in a bus accident at age 18, and began painting in bed during her year-long convalescence. Kahlo suffered through 30 subsequent operations and a partial amputation of her right leg. What is it about?
Completed after Kahlo remarried her lifelong love, Diego Rivera, the painting,"Roots", symbolizes their unity after years of pain and suffering. It is among the few full-length self-portraits by Kahlo in existence, measures 30.5 by 49.9 cm (12 by 19 1/2 ins). Roots had been in a North American Collection for over twenty years and was exhibited last year in the 2005 Frida Kahlo retrospective at the Tate Modern. Of the limited number of works produced during Kahlo’s lifetime, her self-portraits are her most famous and well-known. Executed in 1943, following Kahlo’s reunion with Rivera, Roots depicts Kahlo in a rocky area, the Pedregal in the south of Mexico City, where Rivera designed the Anahuacalli Museum to house his pre-Columbian art collection.

What is it about?: For this painting, there are two conflicting schools of thought as to its meaning. Some say the Chick in the painting is the fragile and threatened Frida while others are convinced that, because of its portly stature and confident pose, it is Frida's husband Diego Rivera.
If it is indeed Frida, then the painting probably symbolizes Frida's fragile emotional and physical state at the time. Her crumbling relationship with Diego, the death of her father and her worsening health and pending back surgery all have drained her emotionally. Why Frida Kahlo draw it?
After Frida Kahlo's a horrific bus crash that shattered her spine and fractured her legs, pelvis, collarbone and ribs. She painted the picture and said, because she was "bored as hell in bed". An almost incidental pencil sketch, The Accident, recalls the horror of the incident: the bus, the moment of impact, the bodies lying in the street.
In 1929 at 21, Kahlo married Mexico and draw this picture.

The expression on her face is one of sadness and loniness, condemned to a life of childlessness. The stark empty room only projects the feeling of emptiness that the childless Frida must feel.

Frida Kahlo was a painter overshadowed by her famous husband, who had many medical obstacles to overcome within her life. I have great hope that my beautiful girl can kick it much in the same way, once I gain her trust.
This painting doesn’t do her justice; her confirmation is the most muscular that I have seen. Like always, I concentrated on the colors and shapes within the composition and followed an abstract route.

In 1984, Andy Warhol produced a series of prints entitled Details of Renaissance Paintings featuring images from classical Renaissance art. In this particular silkscreen, Warhol raids the sacred bastions of art history to appropriate an image from Sandro Botticelli's 1482 painting, Birth of Venus. Instead of portraying Venus standing in an open seashell, Warhol focuses on her face and flowing hair. He printed four variations of this image, each in a different colour palette.
